The Thinning Veil- What Does That Mean?

Updated: May 31, 2022

What better time of year to talk of Spirit than Halloween?

There have been many times during my spiritual journey where I have not known what all the buzz around the “thinning of the veil” is and why it’s significant. As a psychic medium, intuitive, empath, earth-based spiritualist, etc… I felt like the veil was thin all the time. So what’s so special about the veil in October (in the Northern Hemisphere) and why is it called a veil?

The “veil” represents the boundary between this world on the earthly plane and the spirit world. It covers what is to be “seen” on the other side. During this time of year, the veil is thinning as it follows another turn of the wheel of the year, and we see this in the earth’s behavior. The leaves are falling from the trees, plant energy retreats to its roots for the winter, animals go into hibernation, birds fly to warmer climates and the squirrels look unbelievably large as they gather and bury acorns. Happening this time of year for we humans, the last crops are harvested and traditionally, animals are slaughtered to be stored for winter food. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer and much colder, we retreat inside around the fire place, surrounded by friends and family, sharing stories or contemplating what is most precious to us in life.

21st century culture isn’t conducive for much of this, however, that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. When we become still, we are naturally prone to hear more, to listen longer and to contemplate deeper. From this meditative state, the words, sounds and signs from Spirit can be easily seen all around us. All we have to do is ask.

If you are a person who typically dreads this time of year, I challenge you think of all of the good that you can get out of it. Sit quietly with a lit candle next to you and think about all you have achieved this year, what you want to see change and what new things could emerge for you when the earth begins to awaken on the Spring Equinox.

These rituals are similar to what people may take to doing on January 1st of every calendar year, but why not ease into it instead of being your own Task Master of joining a gym, losing weight or quitting drinking? We both know that this ultimately makes us feel rotten for not meeting those unrealistic expectations. Setting ourselves up to fail is neither productive or inspiring. Take advantage of the thinning veil to honor the Self. Taking time for true reflection over a period of time is much more in the flow and congruous to our natural inclinations this time of year.

Maybe you’ve lost a loved one and would love to hear a comforting message from them or see a sign that they know you’re thinking of them. The thinning veil brings them closer to us in a way as we become less distracted and more inward. They are always there, guiding us with love and light.

What we can do this time of year as the veil thins is gather the energy of the ideas of what we want to grow, to germinate, and ultimately be re-birthed in the spring when the Mother begins to wake up once again. Our guides and ancestors are always with us, guiding us, whispering in our ears and giving us daily signs, that Hey, We love you! We are here! Everything is going to be OK this winter.

Whatever ritual you feel compelled to do is “perfect”. That’s the thing that is so hard to remember in the loud world we live in. Just remember that how we answer our own soul’s calling is exactly what we need to do.

Happy New Year!

Love and blessings to all, always…
